Malpractice insurance for the clergy
is gaining in popularity mainly because society has generally
become more litigation conscious. Fifteen or twenty years ago
ministers were primarily concerned with spiritual matters, but,
today more are into the holistic approach, counseling in the spiritual
as well as physiological aspects and are subject to suits.
The United Methodist Church once announced
that 6,000 of its churches now carry malpractice insurance. The
United Presbyterian Church recently offered malpractice protection
to its clergy through Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Company
of Des Moines, Iowa. The Church Mutual Insurance Company is also
offering this special coverage.
