<p>The purchase of ULC products and supplies can be deducted against income generated from your work as a minister.&nbsp; If you are employed, you will deduct such purchases as employee business expenses, or request reimbursement from your employer.&nbsp; There are limitations to how much you can deduct for employee business expense, check with your tax preparer.</p>
<p>If your work as a minister is self-employment (wedding ministry, for example) you would deduct such expenses on Schedule C (report of profit or loss).</p>
<p>Purchases&nbsp;are not considered charitable contributions.&nbsp;&nbsp; Free will donations made to the church, where you don't receive anything in return, are deductible as&nbsp;contributions, subject to any limitations imposed by the IRS on contributions.</p>
<p>An excellent source of current information, tips, and guidelines for filing taxes as a minister, we highly recommend the <a title="Zondervan Tax Guide for Ministers" href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=031026216X/marynasbooks-20/">Zondervan Tax Guide for Ministers</a>.&nbsp; This excellent book is written by a leading CPA, who is a specialist in this field of taxes.&nbsp;&nbsp; It is updated annually, and is highly useful for those who earn income as ministers.&nbsp; If you do not earn income as a minister, you cannot deduct the cost of supplies and materials, and you don't need this book.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[The Universal Life Church is able to provide letters of good standing, and other similar documents which may be required to register with your state in order to officiate marriage. The requirements for each state are different, and the staff at ULC Headquarters is aware of what is required in each state.<br /><br />Because there is no charge for this service, the church is unable to provide such letters for those who don't need them for registration. It is a very labor-intensive job, as each letter must be meticulously prepared according to requirements that vary widely for each state.<br /><br />If your state does require such registration, contact the ULC International Headquarters office in Modesto with your request. Please make every effort to do this well in advance of the marriage date so as to avoid disappointment. Contact information for ULC International Headquarters is provided at the end of this message.<br /><br />The church does not charge for this service, in order to allow everyone to fully participate at a ULC minister without cost. Any voluntary donations you choose to make to help with the cost of providing this service will be sincerely appreciated. Also, please note that a few states require these letters to be notarized. <content:encoded><![CDATA[In most states, you do not require any sort of registration, and as a result, in those states, there is no document that you can obtain from the state government showing that you are really a minister.  This makes some people uncomfortable, because they are used to having the government approve of things to make them official.<br /> <br /> This is not the case with religious matters, thanks to the First Amendment.  However, since marriage is also a civil contract, the state does allow itself to regulate the officiation of marriage.  The only thing there is that they cannot approve of ministers of one church while declining another.  They do not get to determine which churches are "OK".  Whatever rules they have for this must apply equally to all ministers.<br /> <br />&nbsp;It really doesn't matter who says the magic words at a wedding.  The couple must obtain a marriage license from the state, it must be witnessed, and must be returned to the state for recording.  There are no special skills involved.  Anyone who can speak can perform a wedding, and if it's OK for the couple, it should be enough for the state.   <br /> <br /> Some states do require the minister to register.&nbsp;  You can learn about the general requirements for various states by checking our web site:<br />http://weddings.ulc.net<br /><br />For those who place a value on having a government agency acknowledge them as a minister, it is possible for them to register in one of the states which does require registration, even if they do not live there.&nbsp;&nbsp; Such registration is valid for officiating marriage in the state which provides the registration, but it does give the minister a nice "government issued" certificate saying that they are really a minister, something is which otherwise not available to them.<br /><br />The easiest state to deal with, in my opinion, is Ohio.   Anyone can register in Ohio as a minister authorized by that state to officiate marriage within that state.  You just get a form from their web site, send it in along with $10 and an original ordination credential certificate, and the Ohio Secretary of State will send back an official certificate saying that you are recognized in Ohio as a minister who can officiate marriage there. <p>A minimum of three persons must serve as officers and the board of directors.&nbsp; From there, the board of directors will vote to adopt by-laws, or a constitution and to make resolutions to govern the affairs of the church.&nbsp;&nbsp; One resolution that you will want to make from the start is a resolution authorizing someone to apply for an Employee Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS.&nbsp; This can be done by phone, mail, in person, or on the Internet:<br /><a href="http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102766,00.html">http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102766,00.html</a></p>
<p>Once you have the EIN and a resolution from the board authorizing the opening of a bank account, you can take these papers to the bank, along with a minimum of two officers, and open a bank account for your church.</p>
<p>Churches, as defined by the IRS, fall under 501c3 by default, and are not required to complete the complex filing procedure to be formally recognized as such.&nbsp;&nbsp; It is optional, and in my opinion, is tantamount to asking the IRS for permission to be a church, thus waiving an essential right of religious freedom.&nbsp;&nbsp; On the IRS web site, you will find a list of 14 points that it considers in making the determination as to whether an organization is a church or not.&nbsp;&nbsp; You do not have to meet all of the 14 points, and the IRS does not make public the manner in which it "scores" this evaluation.&nbsp; Suffice to say that the more of the points you meet, the stronger your case will be should your organization's church status ever be called into question.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If you do not yet meet some of the points listed, but plan to in the future, it would be wise to include a discussion of your future plans at a board meeting and to subsequently approve a resolution proclaiming your intentions. <br /><a href="http://www.irs.gov/charities/churches/article/0,,id=155746,00.html">http://www.irs.gov/charities/churches/article/0,,id=155746,00.html</a></p>

<p>Formal affiliation with the ULC in Modesto is not required, although doing so may be useful to support the position that your organization is a real church.&nbsp; Formal affiliation with the "Mother Church", as well as with other organizations for churches, such as the ECFA (<a href="http://www.ecfa.org/">www.ecfa.org</a>) can help establish that the church adheres to professional standards and fraternal affiliation.&nbsp; ULC Church charters may be arranged directly though ULC Headquarters in Modesto.&nbsp; It is important that you transact this agreement directly with ULC Headquarters.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I consider the "Zondervan Book" (referenced below) to be an essential reference for starting a church.&nbsp; If you have a church or plan to start one, you must obtain a copy of this book.&nbsp; It will save you a lot of time, frustration, confusion, and can easily save your church from making a costly mistake.&nbsp;&nbsp; Even if you have a CPA or attorney involved in setting up your church, get a copy of this book and take it with you to any meetings you have with your advisor.&nbsp;&nbsp; It can provide quick, authoritative answers to questions which they might otherwise charge you to "research".</p>

<p>To affiliate your local congregation with ULC, complete the form and return it to ULC Headquarters, 601 Third Street, Modesto, CA&nbsp; 95351.&nbsp;&nbsp; The $35 fee donation is submitted directly to ULC Headquarters.&nbsp; Quarterly report forms can be obtained from ULC Headquarters,&nbsp;as well as <a href="http://ulc.net/forms" target="_blank">on the web site</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; The $5 monthly administrative fee donation may be paid quarterly and submitted to HQ along with your quarterly reports.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[The Universal Life Church is about religious freedom. Each person has the right and responsibility to determine what is right. Our only doctrine is "Do only that which is right."<br /><br />We also believe that you are already ordained, from the beginning, and that the church merely documents this ordination so that it is acceptable to the government. (John 15:16). In truth, the government has no authority to question your peaceful spiritual practices anyway, and you do not require the ordination of the Universal Life Church to be a minister.<br /><br />Just because someone is a minister does not mean you can trust them, regardless of what church ordains them. Ministers and priests of all faiths are regularly convicted of serious crimes. Moreover, different churches believe different things, so these ministers are telling people different things, which are in conflict with one another. If you believe someone because they are a minister, how would you reconcile the conflicting things you are told by different ministers?<br /><br />No regulatory power, whether created by a government or a church, will ever have any legitimate authority over those it purports to serve, other than that which comes from the individuals. As an adult individual, you are&nbsp;responsible for governing yourself, and as long as you do not infringe on the rights of others.<br /><br />If you ask to be ordained as a minister, no church should refuse you ordination. How can they? What authority do they have to deny you ordination that has already been given? You are responsible for your actions as a minister, not the church. If you make a mockery of religion, then that is your religion.<br /><br />I do not have to be a cheerleader for your religion. There are many people I wish would not express themselves. But I am grateful to God that they are free to make their own choices, foolish and idolatrous as they may be.<br /><br />Since everyone is already ordained, we are equal in matters of religion. If someone is called to serve their community as a minister, that is great, and their ministry can be evaluated by the good that they do. But regardless of how good they are as humans, they are not superior to you before God and should not be followed. They can preach, and you can listen, but evaluate what they say and reject that which does not resonate with what you know to be true in your heart.<br /><br />Some people who become ministers do so as a joke, or to prove a point. Interestingly enough, many of these same people find that the experience changes them and they go on to have sincere and meaningful ministries.<br /><br />The Universal Life Church will ordain all who ask, without cost, for life, and without question of faith. It is not the ordination, or the piece of paper, which makes someone a minister. It is their activity as a minister. How they act, what they do. It is not for we humans to judge their hearts, or the sincerity of their calling, or their ability to be effective as ministers. Many churches do this, and end up prohibiting many good and decent people from following the calling of their hearts. Some churches will not permit women to be ordained.<br /><br />Others require advanced "training", which can unduly effect their thinking. Most churches require ministers to adhere to the church doctrines, even when they have been convicted that the doctrine is in error. Our doctrine is not in conflict with any peaceful belief system, so it is not a problem. People can (and do) belong to our church as well as others, and many of our ministers are also ministers of other, more traditional churches.]]></content:encoded>

We have been working with them for several weeks in an effort to get them to stop doing this, but to date, they have done nothing. If you find the email in your junk mail folder, please be sure to mark it as "not spam", to help Yahoo start to understand that these emails are legitimate.</p>

<p>The Universal Life Church of Modesto, California, is a legally recognized California church. Weekly services are held in the historic church building each Sunday morning. It is very much a real church, which has been verified time and again in past legal challenges. Within the U.S., freedom of religion is absolute as it pertains to peaceful activity. Marriage is both a civil contract and a spiritual rite, so the government does have authority to regulate this, even in free countries. Some ministers have reported being granted permission by the province, while others have been denied. The best thing to do is to check with the authority in your province which issues marriage licenses. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br />The Monastery (themonastery.org) in Seattle is&nbsp;not affiliated with the real Universal Life Church in Modesto, California. Some of their leadership were reportely involved with the ULC Monastery in Tucson, Arizona, which is a long-time, legitimate associate of the church.&nbsp; Brother Daniel Zimmerman, president of the ULC Monastery in Tucson, reports that, without permission, the group in Seattle transferred the domain name and assets of theTucson-based <em>Monastery</em> (ulc.org) to their control.&nbsp; That domain name now forwards to themonastery.org<br /><br />This has caused a great deal of confusion, and the Seattle group&nbsp;seems to be&nbsp;attempting to suggest to their visitors that they are part of the original ULC&nbsp;and that their entity has been in existence since 1959, neither of which is true.<br /><br />Church headquarters terminated all ties with them&nbsp;years ago, after it came to the church's attention that the ulc.org domain name was no longer under the control of the legitimate&nbsp;ULC Monastery in Tucson.&nbsp; Ordinations and other transactions conducted with&nbsp;"The Monastery" since that time are entirely unrelated to the original ULC in Modesto.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A marriage in Pennsylvania, in which a person ordained by "The Monastery"&nbsp;presided, was recently nullified by a court on the basis that it was not a properly ordained minister, and other states have rejected their ordinations for purposes of officiating marriage as well.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As a Universal Life Church minister, if you are at least 18 years old, you may officiate marriage in California. The state does not require you to provide proof of your ordination nor to register your status as a minister. However, if you officiate a marriage in another state, you may be required to do so. After submitting your ordination application through the ULC.NET website, your ordination will be reviewed by a human, as is required by the laws of some states (it is NOT a "computer" or "online" ordination, just because the application is submitted over the Internet). If you have provided all the required information, your application will be approved, and we will send you a confirmation message by email, showing your name, address, and date of ordination, along with other information. Your record will be kept on file permanently in the official church records in Modesto, California, and may be verified if needed.<br /><br />You do not need to obtain a credential certificate or any other items in order to officiate marriage in California, although many ministers like to have one anyway, to show to the bride and groom (or their parents!) to reassure them if needed. In California, you are not required to provide the couple with a marriage certificate, but it is a nice, professional touch. You can find <a href="http://www.ulc.net/support/staff//index.php?page=shop&amp;cat=14">official ULC marriage certificates</a> on the web site.</p>
<p>In addition to credential certificates, we offer a nice wallet credential, printed on high quality polyester/PVC blend cardstock, and overlaid with a holographic security protective layer. They are very professional and long-lasting. We also offer marriage certificates (optional, but a nice touch to provide one to the couples you marry), ceremony guide books (to make your job easier), and even clergy shirts for a traditional look.<br /><br />You must obtain the marriage license from the couple in advance of the ceremony, in order to make sure that there is one, that it is valid for the date you officiate the marriage, and so that this is not forgotten in the excitement after the ceremony. In California, it is a crime to solemnize a marriage without having first reviewed the marriage license for validity! After the ceremony, you will fill out the blanks on the form. Print, except for your signature, and use black ink. You and the witnesses will sign the form. If it asks for your denomination, put "Universal Life." It is YOUR job to make sure that the completed license is returned to the county clerk for recording within 10 days of the ceremony (very important). It is a good idea to make a photocopy of the completed license before returning it and for you to keep this copy in your permanent records. <br /><br />If you return the license by mail, use certified mail and hold onto a copy of the receipt (staple it to the photocopy of the marriage license you made). You don't need to get a return receipt. You can use the number on the receipt to establish that it was delivered.<br /><br />The state will not automatically send an official copy of the recorded license to the couple, which they will need for their records and to conduct various business transactions in the future. A nice, professional touch is for you to order a copy of the license for them at the time you return the license for recording. Be sure to let them know that you have done this, or they will think the state was their benefactor instead of you! If you return the license by mail, you can print out the order form online.</p>

<p>Brother Daniel Zimmerman, president of the ULC Monastery in Tucson reports that without permission, the group in Seattle, transferred the domain name of his Tucson Monastery (<span style="color: #000099;">ulc.org</span>) to their control.&nbsp; It now forwards to themonastery.org</p>
<p>This has caused a great deal of confusion, as the Seattle group is clearly attempting to communicate to their visitors that they are part of the original ULC, and even claim to have been in existence sincd 1959 and ordained millions.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>Due to the conflict over rightful control of the domain name and the ULC Monastery corporation, church headquarters terminated affiliation with them several months ago.&nbsp; Ordinations and other transactions conducted with the ULC Monastery since then are entirely unrelated to the original ULC in Modesto.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p><em><span style="color: #0000cc;"><strong>&nbsp;Q:</strong>&nbsp; I understand that the ULC degrees are accredited.&nbsp; By whom are they accredited, and what can I do with one?</span></em></p>
<p>The Universal Life Church issues several degrees, and all degrees issued by the church are recorded in the permanent church records. The church has been in existence since 1959, retaining records of all ordinations and degrees issued since then.<br /><br />The degrees convey rank, title, or status within the church. They do not convey academic standing or achievement. They are accredited by the International Accrediting Association (I.A.A.), which is the accreditation arm of the church. This means that the course, degree, or title has been approved and endorsed by the I.A.A. by authority of the Board of Directors. If you have questions related to the issuance of church degrees and titles, you should direct them to <a href="mailto:generalcontact@ulchq.com">generalcontact@ulchq.com</a>.<br /><br />Would I place a ULC title on a resume, application for employment or academic standing? In most cases, I would not. It would not be ethical to represent a degree as something other than what it is in order to obtain something to which you are not otherwise entitled. <br /><br />For example, if someone with a Doctor of Divinity were to don a white lab coat over surgical scrubs, drape a stethescope around his neck, calling himself "Doctor So-and-So"&nbsp;while&nbsp;offering health screenings, he would be engaging in fraud, contrary to the Universal Doctrine. He'd also be at risk of finding himself engaged in a full-time prison ministry!<br /><br />If the same person wore a clerical collar, offered you a business card refereing to himself as Dr. So-and-So, &nbsp;it would be entirely appropriate.&nbsp; Or if offered as "bona fides" when you're being introduced as a speaker.</p>
<p>In some cases, you may be prohibited from listing church degrees on an application, because it relates to the practice of religion. <br /><br />In no case would I include such information under the heading of Education, nor as Specialized Training. It would be more appropriate to list these credentials under the heading of Titles, Awards, or Other Achievements.</p>
<p>In some few cases, your status as an ordained ministers may be relevant. For example, if you were applying for a job as a wedding minister at a Las Vegas Chapel, you would have to be an ordained minister, capable of performing lawful marriage in Clark County. In such a case, your status as an ordained minister with the ULC would be highly relevant. It would appropriate to include any and all other ULC titles and degrees you have in this situation.<br /><br />If an employer suspects that you are attempting to pass off your religious titles as academic training or to qualify for a pay raise, you will lose a lot of credibility.<br /><br />The Universal Life Church does not impose a tithe (tax) on its members, as is so popular in many of the big dog churches. Heck, at ULC they don't even pass the plate at Sunday services!<br /><br />People contribute to the fraternal and financial requirements of this organization in other ways,&nbsp;however they&nbsp;may be&nbsp;moved by Spirit to participate. <br /><br />One person may bring an offering of brownies &amp; milk to services, while another may offer a refreshing beverage to the celebration of fraternity. On a broader scale, members of the ULC&nbsp;host meetings and gatherings in their homes.&nbsp; Many&nbsp;choose to contribute support by participating in the&nbsp;church's instructional mission, as well as the Degree, Sainthood, Congregation, Title, and other programs. <br /><br />In this way, your&nbsp;visit to the ULC Bookstore (www.ulc.net) helps maintain and promote this historic church and its vital work for the cause of&nbsp;religious freedom.<br /><br />Did you know that Doctor of Divinity and similar degrees are honorary titles, regardless of the institution which issues the degree? <content:encoded><![CDATA[There is just one doctrine in the Universal Life Church:<br /><br />Do <em>only</em> that which is right. <br /><br />Each person bears the responsibility to peacefully determine what is right, and to refrain from interfering with the rights of others.<br /><br />We stand for absolute freedom of religion in regard to peaceful practices. <br /><br />This doctrine does not deny any person the freedom to peacefully choose their path.<br /><br />What <strong><em><span style="font-size: medium;">you</span></em></strong> believe is what matters most. Believe it with all your heart, while continuing to grow in your pursuit of truth and righteousness.<br /><br />We believe you are ordained already, by God. However, the government does not accept ordination from God, so the Universal Life Church makes it possible for you to become ordained in the sight of the government, and to pursue your own beliefs and ministry, according to the dictates of your heart.<br /><br />ULC ministers follow a wide variety of spiritual paths, some of them are even bizarre or offensive. The Universal Doctrine does not conflict with any peaceful belief system, nor attempt to control the beliefs of others, including the church ministers. However anything you hear beyond "Do only that which is right", is not Universal Doctrine, it is simply the beliefs of an individual. It does not matter if that person is the founder of the church, the host of a web site, or a derelict on Skid Row. All are equal in this church.<br /><br />The ULC is a real church, and very sincere in its mission. Some ULC ministers are not sincere, but we do not judge their intent. The ULC will ordain all who ask, without cost, for life, and without question of faith. The church has been doing this since it began in 1959, and has grown steadily through the years.. Today, there are ministers and congregations around the globe. ULC International Headquarters is in Modesto, California, housed in an historic church complex. <p>ULC.NET is the only site authorized by the Universal Life Church in Modesto.&nbsp;&nbsp; We work directly in cooperation with the Modesto church, and are authorized to provide their official materials directly to you without delay.&nbsp; There are some other sites which offer ULC materials, however, they cannot ship to you directly, which results in delays and added potential for errors.</p>
<p>Additionally, there are some web sites which attempt to confuse visitors into believing they are affiliated with or part of the original Universal Life Church in Modesto.&nbsp; Several sites have been established in recent years, the proprietors of which use misleading titles, meta tags, and even use Universal Life Church in their name in an attempt to fool search engines and visitors into believing they are dealing with the original ULC.&nbsp;&nbsp; The ordinations issued by these rogue sites are not recorded with the church in Modesto and may not be recognized in all states.&nbsp; Be sure you are dealing only with an authorized Universal Life Church web site.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>Among the sites which are NOT AFFILIATED with the original Universal Life Church in Modesto are the "Progressive Universal Life Church - pulc.org", "The Universal Life Church Monastery - ulc.org, themonastery.org, ulcmonastery.com and other similar domains", and "Universal Ministries - universalministries.com".&nbsp; There are also some web sites that purport to be ULC sanctioned sites, but which only take people's money and do not report the ordinations to the church at all, which means that the ordinations are never properly recorded and are not legal!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Recently, someone has begun offering ULC ordinations for sale on ebay as well.&nbsp; Please be careful!&nbsp;&nbsp; There are many scammers in the world!</p>
<p>Be particularly cautious of any site which promises "instant" ordination.&nbsp; This is a legal fiction.&nbsp; To be legal, ordination must be done as a "deliberate, responsible act", and a computer cannot ordain someone.&nbsp; Some such sites even offer an "instant online credential", but this again is a legal fiction and you cannot rely on this credential as evidence that you have, in fact, been ordained.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In most cases, the reason that a previously created listing is no longer appearing in the directory is that the listing is either newly created or has been recently edited.&nbsp; Please be aware that whenever you create a new listing or modify and existing listing in our directory, the listing will not show up until we have a chance to review it. Usually, this delay is less than 24 hours, although depending on available staff and other priorities, it may take longer on occasion.<br /><br />Although this extra step adds to our workload, we feel that it is important. Without such a review, the directory could become infected with spam or ugly postings that would diminish the credibility of legitimate users who wish to be listed with other real ministers, and not amidst ads for mortgages (or worse!).</p>
<p>If you have not recently added your listing or made changes to it, and if you are sure that you previously created a listing here, it is unlikely, but possible, that your listing was deleted.&nbsp; This has on rare occasions occurred as a result of a server problem or corruption of the database.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If that is the case, you may simply add your listing again, as a new listing.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>Please remember that your directory listing has nothing to do with your ordination record.&nbsp; You are not automatically added to the directory when you become ordained, as the vast majority of ministers prefer not to be publicly listed.&nbsp;&nbsp; Also, when you update your directory listing information, it does not update your ordination record (and vice versa).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If you have not taken the step to intentionally create a directory listing, your information will not appear here.</p>

Your official record resides only in the church database in Modesto, California. The official church records contain over 22 million records.<br /><br />The ULC Online Directory, like any other ULC directory you may find on the web, will include only the names and contact information of ULC ministers who have decided to post their listing here. If you haven't created a page for yourself here, it won't be listed. If you were wondering why you couldn't find your listing, that is usually the reason.<br /><br />Many ministers like to include a link to their "ULC Web Page" on their business cards, letterhead, or as a link from their own web site.
